FREDRIKSTAD -

Fredrikstad was founded in 1567 by King Frederik II after Sarpsborg was burned to the ground by the Swedes during the Nordic Seven Years’ War. Rising from the ashes, the city became both a royal tribute and a fortress town, built stronger and smarter where the river meets the sea. Gamlebyen, with its cobblestone streets and star shaped ramparts, still stands today as Scandinavia’s best preserved fortress town.

In the 19th century Fredrikstad grew into one of Norway’s most important industrial hubs, powered by sawmills, shipyards and brickworks. Timber and trade gave the city its proud nickname Plankebyen, while its harbor connected it to the world.

The coat of arms, officially approved in 1967 for the city’s 400 year anniversary, shows a golden bear guarding a golden fortress on a red background. The design traces back to the city’s medieval seal and was redrawn by Hallvard Trætteberg, the heraldic master behind Norway’s national coat of arms. Even today, the bear stands as a fierce symbol of strength, history and resilience.
