NESSEBY -
Nesseby is beautifully located by the Varangerfjord in Finnmark, a region known for its dramatic Arctic landscapes and strong Sámi traditions. The municipality has long been a cultural hub where history, language, and nature intertwine, offering visitors a glimpse into the living heritage of the Sámi people.
The coat of arms, officially granted in 1986, carries deep symbolism. It shows a golden cloudberry plant with two leaves and one berry, set against a vivid red background. The cloudberry, a rare fruit of the northern marshes, represents both the richness of the local nature and the community’s deep connection to the land. For centuries, cloudberries have been valued in Sámi and Norwegian culture, used in traditional dishes and treasured as a delicacy.
The red background reflects strength and vitality, while the golden plant embodies both the natural abundance and the cultural wealth of the municipality. Together, these elements form a symbol that speaks not only of the land itself, but of the resilience and spirit of the people who call Nesseby home.
